Robert Cathey Research Source Shroud Page

The Shroud of Turin looks like a photographic negative. A sepia-tone image in the original. As an item of great interest to us, both historically, and scientifically--the questions surrounding it's authenticity as a religious relic being set aside--we felt people might appreciate seeing the results of experimental manipulations of a scanned photograph of the Shroud Face.

The first image above was created by a series of manipulations with a deformation filter, as found in PaintShopPro. First I used the original image, as displayed below the first one. Then using four different deformation filters, in various percentages, ended up with this likeness showing an apparent 3/4 aspect of the Face.

This example is not very good, because in trying to match the source image size with the manipulated one, the second one's pixelation enlarged. It's just like magnification and resolution in microscopy. I just don't know how to enlarge an image and retain the same resolution. I'm just learning.

This is another one of the same generation, just before the top image. Using less vertical compression and, as you can see, reversed so it is facing the same way as the actual Shroud Image.

And this is the top image, reversed. Somehow, it changes the whole dimensional aspect to have the image showing more of the Face's right side. Also, notice, that the image is definitely directionally lit. None of these images have been retouched by me. I lifted the original from a Shroud page, but don't know which one. That source image may actually be itself a manipulated image. But, I find it curious that the image should show a difference in bilateral illumination, and am not sure what that may entail. However one thinks the image got on there, explaining that difference should be an interesting problem. More soon.
